Agile Communications selects Cisco Systems for ADSL trial network

02 Jun 2000

Agile Communications, South Australia's first licensed carrier, today announced that it has selected Cisco Systems' ADSL hardware and services for deployment in a trial access network over Telstra copper lines.

Telstra recently announced the selection of Agile as the only South Australian participant in the Unbundled Local Loop (ULL) trial process. Agile will leverage Cisco DSL hardware over Telstra copper exchange wiring, to provide an always-on, broadband Internet access facility for business and residential customers.

Agile is currently completing a Facilities Access Agreement with Telstra in order to co-locate Cisco DSL equipment within designated Telstra exchanges.

The initial trials will be undertaken in the inner Adelaide metropolitan area and also in Port Augusta, to test and prove the technology over a wide range of conditions.

"We are pleased to have been invited by Telstra to participate in the ADSL trial process", said Simon Hackett, Technical Director of Agile. "We look forward to working with Cisco on our DSL deployments, to leverage their industry leadership and experience in the US market as we open the doors to ADSL in South Australia".

The deployment of ADSL by Agile will augment and compliment its ongoing South Australian rollout, providing an additional 'last mile' termination option for its broadband services.

The Agile network is currently based on optical fiber and broadband wireless systems in the greater Adelaide area, and on long haul microwave based equipment being deployed in rural areas of South Australia. These carriage technologies are integrated with in-house developed network termination units that provide advanced network link management, monitoring and control for customer services.
