Ericsson IP DSLAMEricsson wins Ethernet DSL broadband network contract with Agile

12 Feb 2004

Internet era telecommunications carrier Agile Communications has awarded Ericsson a contract to supply Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access (EDA) solution that features the world's smallest DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM).

The Ericsson EDA solution will enable Agile Communications to continue the construction of a dedicated national Ethernet-based broadband network that offers telephony, high-speed Internet and data services.

Agile Communications Managing Director Simon Hackett said Agile was committed to delivering highly reliable, widespread broadband access. "By having our own end to end network, all the way from customer sites to our national network core, we are increasing our independence," he said. "This is significant for our customers, as Agile can now offer much higher performance and new quality-assured services - we are no longer dependent on the non-guaranteed, limited speed DSL services provided by another carrier."

"Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access solution is also highly complementary to Agile's growth strategy, as it can be quickly deployed and enables standard ADSL lines to be offered economically in large and small exchange areas. It will enable Agile to continue its strategy of ADSL-enabling smaller regional exchange areas that have been considered uneconomic to address by Telstra. In addition, the solution is being deployed to provide higher speeds and advanced service options for business and residential customers in larger exchange areas. The modular EDA design allows us to very effectively manage our continued geographic service deployments".

EricssonEricsson's Ethernet DSL Access solution is the cornerstone of Ericsson's Public Ethernet offering. Featuring remarkably small modular micro-DSLAM's, the product is far more compact, cost-effective and energy-efficient than older style ATM-based chassis DSLAM's, but can offer scales from 10's to 1000's of lines. So carriers benefit from reducing both operating and capital costs.

Ericsson Australia Director of Marketing and Business Development Tony Malligeorgos said Agile Communications already has a strong reputation for innovation, so Ericsson is very pleased to have been chosen as a partner. "Our two companies will work together to drive the Australian broadband market forward."

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

Ericsson IP DSLAM - Straight on View

About Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access Solution

Ericsson's Ethernet DSL Access solution enables fixed network operators to deploy the required second-mile bandwidth at less than half of the cost of equivalent ATM-based bandwidth. By avoiding concentration in the DSLAM and connecting directly to an Ethernet aggregation network, the new solution opens up the possibility to support high bandwidth-demanding services without DSLAM bottlenecks, while at the same time reducing transport costs ten-fold. This dramatically alters the economics of rolling out DSL and enables operators to address the 'second wave' of broadband subscribers profitably, following the initial early-adopter wave.

A key advantage of providing DSL services in this way is that existing standardized DSL interfaces are unchanged. The subscriber simply uses a standard DSL modem.
