Agile’s Regional Reach Wins ATUG Nod

11th March 2005

Internet age telco Agile Communications has scored gold in this year’s ATUG Awards for an innovative telecommunication network that has slashed phone costs and introduced super-fast broadband into a regional area of South Australia.

The ATUG Awards are run by the Australian Telecommunications Users Group to recognise the outstanding performance and contributions made by Australians in this country’s dynamic telecommunications industry.

Agile topped a competitive field of seven finalists to collect ATUG’s Best Regional Communication Solution award with its Coorong Project, the first publicly available non-Telstra communication network in regional Australia. With this network, Agile has halved the cost of voice telephone calls for thousands of people who reside in the Coorong region, a largely rural area south east of Adelaide. It has also introduced super-fast ADSL2 broadband into Coorong towns including Meningie and Tailem Bend.

Agile Communications CEO Simon Hackett said the Coorong Project was only the first part of Agile’s investment in rural broadband infrastructure. “We are currently deploying ADSL2 services in several townships on the Yorke Peninsula, west of Adelaide,” he said.

Agile is committed to the principle that the availability of broadband is an essential building block for sustainable economic development in rural and regional areas. We are partnering with local governments in the Coorong and the Yorke Peninsula to provide businesses and residents in those areas with the many benefits of broadband.

The ATUG Award winners were announced as part of this week’s ATUG 2005 Conference.

National broadband innovator Internode was a finalist in this year’s ATUG Awards’ Best Communication Solution for Large Business category with its innovative Internode Business Connect. IBC is a flexible, reliable and secure Wide Area Networking solution that provides the 21st Century alternative to traditional Frame Relay and ISDN Wide Area Networks.

Both Internode and Agile Communications are companies in the Internode Group. Their founder and CEO Simon Hackett last year received The Bulletin-Microsoft Smart 100 IT & Communications Award, an accolade that recognised his role as “thinker and a doer…a businessman who proudly wears his tech-savvies on his sleeve”.
