m.Net Australia consortium wins federal funding for 3G/WLL testbed and applications development environment

29 May 2001

m.Netm.Net Australia, a consortium of South Australian organisations including Agile, Adelaide University, DSpace, the Playford Centre, Telstra and the University of South Australia, today won about $9m in funding under the Federal Government's 'Advanced Networks Program' grant scheme.

Mnet will use the grant to bootstrap its plans to build an advanced city-wide wireless broadband enviroment in the city of Adelaide. The network will include fibre infrastructure, 802.11b WLL based broadband services in city buildings and public spaces, and one of the first rollouts of a 3G wireless mobile voice and data network in Australia.

Mnet has a strong focus on the development of applications over wireless broadband infrastructure, and will be driving applications development in a variety of subject areas, in addition to building and deploying infrastructure over which these applications will be developed and tested.

The successful grant application was announced today (29th April 2001) in Canberra.
